Is it true osama bin laden used to be labeled as a freedom fighter by the u.s. government?

what is the story behind that?Is it true osama bin laden used to be labeled as a freedom fighter by the u.s. government?
';One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.';- Ronald Reagan

It is true. Just like Manuel Noriega, bin laden once was a friend of ours.

It was back when the USSR invaded Afghanistan (Charlie Wilson's War). He came from Yemen and sucked up a lot of the weapons and training the CIA provided for guerrilla warfare.

So once again the CIA failed the country in the long run while trying to be helpful in the short run.Is it true osama bin laden used to be labeled as a freedom fighter by the u.s. government?
No.

In fact - I am impressed by the fact that none of the previous answerers had ever read a biography of Bin Laden.

During the time we were supporting the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan the CIA and Bin Laden distrusted each other and made sure that they stayed out of each other's way.

.
Yes, if we believe in the cause of a terrorist, we call them a ';freedom fighter';. If we don't then we call them a terrorist. We used to be on Bin Laden's side, so it stands to reason that at one point we considered him a freedom fighter.
Not sure if that was exactly what they called him, but YES, he was one of our resources. That goes for Al Queda as well - the word means ';database';, and everyone in it was a US resource in our proxy war against Russia at one point.
the US supplied arms and training for him to fight the Russians in Afghanistan.
One mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter
He was fighting the Soviets. From what I understand we were helping to finance that. Scary, huh?
yeah, the us funded arms to him to fight against soviet ultra nationalistic interests in afghanistan
