Specifically, I'm wondering about roadside cross monuments to commemorate slain police officers in Utah -- a court in Utah has held that the crosses are generic symbols of death and burial. In a place less dominated by Mormons, I would be very skeptical of a claim like that, but I have heard that crosses are not used by Mormons and this makes me want to learn more so I can put the judge's decision in that case in its appropriate context. Any help, from LDS members or others, is much appreciated.What are significant holy symbols used by Mormons? Is it true that Mormons do not use the cross, and why?
Mormons focus on worshiping the living, resurrected Christ, and therefore tend not to use the cross, a symbol of his death. Throughout all LDS Church owned buildings are many many paintings of Jesus Christ.
Paintings of Christ are the main type of symbolism.
We also believe that the angel, mentioned in Revelations 14:6, has come to the earth to restore the gospel of Jesus Christ in its fullness. A replica of that angel is found atop most LDS Temples.
In our worship services, the sacrament is administered. The sacrament is symbolic of Christ's last supper and reminds us to continue to follow Christ, his example, and remember his great atoning sacrifice that makes eternal life possible.What are significant holy symbols used by Mormons? Simply put - it is because we believe in and follow a LIVING CHrist and not the symbol of His death. And just an FYI - Utah now has more NON-Mormons in it's boundaries then mormons, even though the influence of the LDS church and people remain strong. Crosses like many other religious symbols are along the lines of ';idol'; worship and detract from a focus on a resurrected Lord %26amp; Savior.
The real symbol of LDS-people is living a life that pleases God and Jesus as well as they are able to. Another symbol is this

The cross is a symbol of Christ's death. Mormons believe that Christ is a ressurected being and lives. This is why you will not find any crosses on a Mormon church building. We prefer to rejoice in a living Christ.
I second Alissa's answer.
Why celebrate that which killed Jesus
Theres a lot of symbolism in the Temple, but we hold it sacred and don't talk about it. You're not going to see them all over the place like you see the cross. It is true that we do not use crosses.
This is the official church statement on crosses
';The cross is used in many Christian churches as a symbol of the Savior's death and Resurrection and as a sincere expression of faith. As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we also remember with reverence the suffering of the Savior. But because the Savior lives, we do not use the symbol of His death as the symbol of our faith.
Our lives must be the expression of our faith. When we are baptized and confirmed, we covenant to take upon ourselves the name of Jesus Christ. The way we live our lives should demonstrate our love for the Savior and His work.
The only members of the Church who wear the symbol of the cross are Latter-day Saint chaplains, who wear it on their military uniforms to show that they are Christian chaplains. ';
PS- I agree with the court that crosses are a generic symbol of death and burial.
